BEN KELLEY, Principal

“First life, then spaces, then buildings. The other way around never works.” Jan Gehl

I’m a second-generation builder and president of Building Shelter Inc. I combine craft with science to build homes that last generations.

Buildings have the potential to improve our lives.  A well-built home, intentionally sustainable from the beginning, will have a lighter footprint on Nature, be more comfortable and healthier to live in.

Those are the kind of homes I enjoy building and have been trained to build.  Our homes are beautiful, durable, sustainable, healthy and resilient.  My goal is to build you a home that, because it is conscientiously built, improves health, reduces worry and maintenance so you can spend time doing what you love at home.   I will advocate for you through the challenging process of building a new home or improving the one you have from design to living in your home.

Building or remodeling a new home is a significant investment and can feel overwhelming. I am dedicated to safeguarding your investment through the use of durable construction methods, a team of skilled professionals, and responsive service even after your project is completed.

ABOUT BEN

I am Ben Kelley and I created Building Shelter Inc.  I come from a long line of tradesmen and business owners. I began construction with my father in Washington State and during some summers I worked at my grandfather’s heavy equipment shop in California.

I fell in love with Martha’s Vineyard when I arrived in 1996. I discovered building healthy homes made my clients feel good and supported our natural environment.  I have a deep commitment to craftsmanship, durable details, beautiful homes and to the success of our clients' projects, large or small.

MISSION & Commitment

To improve our client's lives by supporting good design and building beautiful, durable, safe, healthy homes.   To provide long term support for our clients and the projects we make for them.  To create spaces that inspire and nurture our clients, their family and friends.

Building homes that inspire and last

It's not what you see that generally surprises us, it's what we didn't expect.  Similarly in homes, it's the unseen 90% that truly impacts the house's long-term performance. I focus meticulously on this hidden 90% to ensure that the 10% you see look exceptional, last longer, and represent true quality. You might admire the surface details, but what truly matters is what's behind those elements and how everything is assembled.

In any field, things evolve quickly, and building is no different. Building Science examines why homes succeed or fail, aiming for more than just staying up and keeping the rain out. It’s about optimal performance—addressing drafts, condensation, simplifying mechanical systems, and choosing non-toxic materials. While many can claim to be builders, great homes comes from understanding these principles. We apply this science to ensure your home is comfortable, healthy, and worry-free.

If health is important to you we can build a home that supports you.  If you invest in exercise, nutrition, and mindful living, why settle for a home that doesn’t enhance your well-being?    We enjoy partnering with clients who strive to get the very best from their homes. Whether your project is large or small, we look forward to creating something that will enhance the quality of your life.
